Resurrected, Conquering Death and Interceding for Sinners
Prophecy
Context – This is the continuation of Day 18 where we looked at Isaiah’s description of the suffering servant who quietly bears humanity’s punishment to bring peace:
Isaiah 53:11-12 – After he has suffered, he will see the light of life and be satisfied; by his knowledge my righteous servant will justify many, and he will bear their iniquities. 12 Therefore I will give him a portion among the great, and he will divide the spoils with the strong, because he poured out his life unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors. For he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.
Fulfillment
Context – It’s now the 3rd day since Jesus was crucified, verified as dead, and placed in a sealed tomb under a Roman guard:
Matthew 28:1-6a – After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. 2 There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. 3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. 4 The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men. 5 The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. 6a He is not here; he has risen, just as he said.
Consummation
Context – This is the first scene in John’s apocalyptic vision, and he sees Jesus in the middle of seven lampstands that symbolize seven churches:
Revelation 1:13-18 – among the lampstands was someone like a son of man, dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet and with a golden sash around his chest. 14 The hair on his head was white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire. 15 His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of rushing waters. 16 In his right hand he held seven stars, and coming out of his mouth was a sharp, double-edged sword. His face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance. 17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: “Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. 18 I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.
