The Sun will be Darkened and There Will be Mourning for an Only Son
Prophecy
Context – Amos prophesied in the 8th century B.C., calling Israel to repentance. While referencing the days of judgment that are coming, he also foretells of a certain future day:
Amos 8:9-10 – “In that day,” declares the Sovereign Lord, “I will make the sun go down at noon and darken the earth in broad daylight. 10 I will turn your religious festivals into mourning and all your singing into weeping. I will make all of you wear sackcloth and shave your heads. I will make that time like mourning for an only son and the end of it like a bitter day.
Fulfillment
Context – While Jesus is on the cross, events occur that can only be described as miraculous:
Luke 23:44-48 – It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, 45 for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. 46 Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last. 47 The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God and said, “Surely this was a righteous man.” 48 When all the people who had gathered to witness this sight saw what took place, they beat their breasts and went away.
Consummation
Context – At the end of the age, Jesus, the spotless Lamb of God, is the only One found worthy to open a scroll with seven seals. He has already opened the first 4 seals that unleash colored horses with riders that bring judgment and the 5th seal which reveals the slain saints calling for final judgment:
Revelation 6:12-17 – When he opened the sixth seal, I looked, and behold, there was a great earthquake, and the sun became black as sackcloth, the full moon became like blood, 13 and the stars of the sky fell to the earth as the fig tree sheds its winter fruit when shaken by a gale. 14 The sky vanished like a scroll that is being rolled up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place. 15 Then the kings of the earth and the great ones and the generals and the rich and the powerful, and everyone, slave and free, hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains, 16 calling to the mountains and rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who is seated on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb, 17 for the great day of their wrath has come, and who can stand?”
Examination
- Why did God choose to darken the sun?
- What is significant about the temple curtain being torn in two?
- What is going to happen to the heavenly lights at the end of the age?
